Fear on Friday gripped the sports fans at Wankuluku Stadium in Kampala following the sudden death of a football referee while officiating a Premier League match.
Senior referee Peter Kabugo is said to have collapsed and died during the 73rd minute while officiating a match between Sports Club Villa and UPDF. By the time of the referee’s collapse, Villa was in the lead of the match with 5-0.
Despite the immediate medical attention and transport to a nearby hospital, he was pronounced dead on arrival, casting a somber shadow over the match.

The game itself started with an early own goal from UPDF’s Aggrey Kiirya just one minute in, setting the tone for SC Villa’s dominance.
Charles Lwanga, with a remarkable performance, scored four goals, including a hat trick, leading his team to a convincing 5-0 victory. This win lifted SC Villa to fourth place in the league standings.
As the football community mourns the loss of Peter Kabugo, SC Villa prepares for an important derby against rivals Express on November 8, while UPDF aims to regroup before their match against Mbarara City on November 6.
