The Police in Butaleja district are holding a suspected cattle thief in Busolwe sub-county.

The suspect is identified as Godfrey Hasahya, a male adult of Bunghumu North, Busolwe sub-county. Hasahya was arrested on Wednesday, on suspicion of having stolen 12 heads of cattle from his neighbour, Robert Kato.

According to the Police officers, Kato, reported his case on Wednesday morning at Busolwe police station, complaining that his 12 heads of cattle had gone missing on Tuesday night.

The Butaleja DPC, Jackson Maumbe, coordinated with Tororo regional Police for a Sniffer dog, which sensed the scent of Hasahya, for a distance of 1.5KM off the scene.

The Police also revealed that they found some clothes, a pair of trousers and a coat with fresh cow dung, beneath the suspect’s bed. They carried the exhibits which will be used to pin Hasahya in court.

Interestingly, during the search, Hasahya, was among the outrageous crowd that was anxious to prove who stole the cattle. However, when the Sniffer dog sat on the door way to Hasahya’s semi permanent house, the angry residents confronted the suspect with intentions to kill him instantly, thank God that the Police fired teargas to manage the situation.

Cattle theft has increased in Butaleja district apparently, to the extent that the NRM new mobiliser and former MP for Bunyole West, Jacob Wangolo, addressing a rally at Bugalo parish, Nawanjofu sub-county, on Tuesday, advised them to kill anybody, suspected to be a thief as a solution to the pandering problem.

Wangolo, boldly argued that it’s worthless to give bond or bail to such  suspects because they are the architects of the problem. According to him, such people give confidence to other thieves upon getting acquitted.
