Suspected Vandal Electrocuted While Climbing Owen Falls–Lugazi Transmission Tower

The incident occurred near Lugazi, along the critical power corridor connecting the Owen Falls Dam to other parts of the national grid.

Residents in Lugazi woke up to a grim scene after a suspected vandal was electrocuted while attempting to climb a high-voltage electricity transmission tower along the Owen Falls–Lugazi Transmission Line.

According to the Uganda Electricity Transmission Company Limited (UETCL), the unidentified individual reportedly tried to access the transmission infrastructure during the night. The attempt ended tragically when the person came into contact with the high-voltage installation, resulting in immediate electrocution.

By morning, the body remained suspended on the steel tower, drawing attention from residents and passersby in the area. UETCL officials confirmed that arrangements were underway to deploy a specialized technical team to safely retrieve the body from the tower without risking further danger.

Authorities said the matter has been handed over to the Uganda Police Force, which has launched an investigation to establish the identity of the deceased and the circumstances surrounding the attempted vandalism.

In a public statement, UETCL strongly warned the public against vandalising or attempting to access electricity transmission infrastructure, emphasizing that such installations carry extremely dangerous electrical currents.

“High-voltage infrastructure is not only critical for national power supply but also extremely hazardous. Any attempt to interfere with it can result in serious injury or death,” the company noted.

UETCL also urged members of the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities around electricity installations to the nearest police station.

Officials stressed that vandalism of power infrastructure does not only disrupt electricity supply to homes and businesses but also poses a serious threat to human life.

Police and electricity authorities are expected to provide further updates once the retrieval operation and investigations are completed.
