The Uganda National Examinations Board (UNEB) has confirmed the arrest of three people, including a school director, a scout and a teacher, over alleged examination malpractice during the opening day of the Primary Leaving Examinations (PLE).

The suspects, who are attached to Prince Primary School in Gayaza, Wakiso District, were arrested on allegations of conspiring to obtain and photograph the Mathematics examination paper to facilitate the preparation of answers for candidates.

UNEB spokesperson Jennifer Kalule Musamba said the school director, who was also serving as the acting head of the examination centre, allegedly worked with a scout deployed from Kayunga District to access and photograph one of the examination papers.

The photograph was reportedly shared with the school’s Mathematics teacher, who was expected to prepare answers for the candidates.

“Three people were arrested, including the school director, who was also acting as the head of centre. She connived with a scout who was posted from Kayunga to pull out one examination paper, which they photographed and gave to the Mathematics teacher to prepare answers for the candidates,” Kalule said.

She added that the suspects were taken to Kasangati Police Station for further investigations.

Kalule cautioned examination officials, particularly invigilators and scouts, against engaging in malpractice, urging them to strictly observe their responsibilities at the centres where they have been deployed.

She also warned school authorities against allowing unauthorised persons into examination centres, emphasising the need to safeguard the integrity and security of the national examinations.

According to UNEB, PLE candidates have on Wednesday morning done the Integrated Science examination, with the English paper scheduled for the afternoon.
