A UPDF officer on Thursday morning shot dead a suspected robber following a failed daylight robbery at a mobile money outlet near Access Building in Kitintale, a Kampala suburb.

According to Kampala Metropolitan Police spokesperson, Patrick Onyango, two robbers armed with a rifle stormed the mobile money outlet shop and held up the mobile money agents, Ibrahim Ssebanenya and Rashid Kyeyune, demanding for cash.

The assailants began packing money into bags but were interrupted when the agents managed to escape and raise the alarm, alerting the nearby residents.

Alerted by the commotion, residents quickly contacted Kitintale Police, who responded and pursued the fleeing suspects as they attempted to escape towards Bugolobi.

“One of the robbers, identified as Farouk Matovu, was intercepted and arrested with the help of community members,” said Onyango.

He is currently detained at Jinja Road Police Station.

The second suspect, who remained unidentified at the time of reporting, continued to flee, firing gunshots in the air to deter boda boda riders and police officers in pursuit.

However, the chase ended fatally in Bugolobi when a UPDF soldier guarding a nearby residence shot and killed the armed fugitive.
