The football community is mourning the heartbreaking loss of a 15-year-old goalkeeper Amelia Aplin, who tragically died after collapsing during a youth match.

Amelia, a promising young player for the academy of Oxford United, collapsed while playing in a fixture against Fulham F.C. at the club’s training centre in Horspath on Saturday. Despite efforts from medical staff and emergency responders, the teenager sadly passed away, leaving her family, teammates and supporters devastated.

In the days following the tragedy, tributes have poured in for the talented goalkeeper. Friends, supporters and members of the local community gathered to lay flowers, scarves and heartfelt messages in her memory, remembering a young athlete whose passion for sport and bright personality touched many lives.

A moving tribute was also held at Kassam Stadium, home of Oxford United, where a minute’s silence took place before the club’s 1–0 Championship victory over Blackburn Rovers F.C. Players, staff and supporters stood together in solemn remembrance of the teenager.

Former Oxford United player Peter Rhoades-Brown described Amelia as “a goalkeeper of immense promise” who would be greatly missed by everyone who knew her.

“Amelia was a teammate, a friend, a sister, a niece and a daughter,” he said in a tribute speech. “She will be greatly missed by everyone who knew her.”

Oxford United captain Cameron Brannagan also shared his condolences, saying Amelia was highly regarded throughout the club.

Away from the football pitch, Amelia was a student at Aylesbury High School in Buckinghamshire, where she was remembered as both a talented athlete and a dedicated student. She was also known to excel in swimming, showcasing her natural sporting ability across multiple disciplines.

Headmistress Marieke Forster described Amelia as “a remarkable young woman who brought joy to everyone who knew her.”

“She was a gifted athlete and a dedicated student, but more importantly she was a friend to many and a vital part of our school community,” Forster said.

In a statement, Oxford United expressed deep sympathy for Amelia’s loved ones and thanked the medical teams from both clubs and the emergency services who responded during the incident.

“The thoughts and sincere condolences from everyone at Oxford United are with Amelia’s family, friends, teammates and coaches,” the club said. “We ask that the family’s privacy is respected at this incredibly difficult time.”

As tributes continue to arrive, Amelia Aplin is being remembered not only for her talent between the posts but also for her kindness, determination and the bright future many believed lay ahead of her.
