At the beginning of last week, 16-year-old Faith Namata visited her mother Doreen Nabawanuka Kasozi to see her health development because she was unwell, and later bid her farewell with a promise to visit again, but the next phone message Nabawanuka received was of her daughter having gone missing, and later of her death.

And according to Namata’s aunt, Pauline Nakacwa, the deceased was last seen on Wednesday at 5:00pm, and that at around 9:00pm, they grew worried but thought she had one to sleep at her mother’s place at Namasuba. They called her number but the calls went unanswered, until it was eventually switched off.

On Saturday, after getting news of death of a girl at Kyengera, they proceeded to Mulago mortuary but discovered that it was not their daughter. The mortuary attendant showed them more bodies, saying there was one of a girl who had been picked from Bunamwaya on Independence Day, and they then discovered Namata’s body.

On Thursday October 9, Bunamwaya-Kikumbi residents chanced on a body of an unknown girl dumped in a bush. Katwe police recovered the body and took it to Mulago.

Since then, police have arrested a boy identified as Jeremiah Kakande in connection to the death of Namata, formerly an S3 student of Kitebi SS, who disappeared from the home of her grandmother Regina Nabaggala with whom she has been staying at Wankulukuku, Lubaga Division.

Jeremiah Kakande, 20, is said to have called an unidentified friend of the deceased, inquiring steps reached in the ‘process’. The friend he called alerted police and staged an ambush where Kakande was arrested. He was taken to Katwe police for custody.

Another friend of the deceased who preferred to stay anonymous said they were in a saloon with Namata and Jeremiah approached her and took her phone apparently with the intention of luring her to go out with him, which she did. She was never seen again alive since then.

The head of Kitebi SS Muhammed Kamulegeya said Namata has been their student but that she last appeared at school on Monday the previous week, and the next they heard was her death.

Residents appealed to parents to step up observance of their children’s movements, saying that youths have developed the tendency of using drugs which influence them to carry on abominable acts.
