Police in Masaka have launched investigations into the death of a 16-year-old Senior Four student who was found dead a day after she went missing.

The deceased, identified as Rayati Nassali Nakato, was a Senior Four student at Masaka Secondary School.

According to preliminary police findings, Nakato left her home in Nyendo Township at about 10:00am on Sunday, August 9, telling her family she was going to a friend’s home in neighboring Kako Village to collect revision papers.

Later that day, at around 4:30pm, she reportedly called her twin sister, Sharifah Babirye, informing her that she had gone to Nabugabo Sand Beach. Her phone was later switched off, prompting concern among family members.

On Monday evening, residents travelling along the Nyendo–Kako Road, which leads to Nabugabo Sand Beach, discovered the body of a teenage girl by the roadside. The body was later identified as that of Nakato.

Southern Regional Police spokesperson Twaha Kasirye confirmed the incident, saying detectives have opened investigations to establish the circumstances surrounding the student’s death.

Kasirye said preliminary observations revealed bruises around the victim’s neck, and investigators are also examining claims that she may have been sexually assaulted before being murdered by unknown assailants who later dumped her body.

“We are investigating all possible circumstances surrounding this incident. We also appeal to parents and guardians to closely monitor the movements of their children and, where possible, ensure they are accompanied by responsible adults,” Kasirye said.

The body was taken for a postmortem examination as police continue the hunt for those behind the killing.
