UCU Law Student Buried Despite Court’s Halting of Burial, Order for DNA

Justice Nagawa’s administrative order has restrained the Respondents, either by themselves, their agents, family members or any other person whom so ever acting under the Respondents’ instructions from burying and disposing of the remains of the deceased Maria Namirembe Angella in any manner whatsoever pending the inter parties hearing and determination of Miscellaneous Cause No. 0235 of 2025.

The remains of the Uganda Christian University (UCU) 3rd year law student, Angella Namirembe who died as a result of a bodaboda accident has today been laid to rest at Jjalamba village in Buvuma sub-county, Mpigi district.

Namirembe has been buried at the ancestral grounds of her father, Lawrence Kiwanuka Nsereko of Kkobe clan, as opposed by the man who claims to be her father, Robert Mutebi who has been taking care of her as her daughter for the last 27 years out of the 29 years he has been married to the deceased’s mother, Agnes Nabisere.

Mutebi and Nabisere are residents of Mutungo Zone IV in Nakawa division, Kampala district yet Kiwanuka stays in the diaspora.

Namirembe’s burial on Friday came at a time when the fight for her true paternity between Mutebi and Kiwanuka had gone to court and on the same day, the Family Division High Court Judge Celia Nagawa had issued an order retraining her burial until a DNA test is conducted.

THIS Matter coming up for disposal on 24th day of October, 2025, before HON. LADY JUSTICE CELIA NAGAWA, Judge of the High Court of Uganda, in the presence of Ms. Birungi Rosemary together with Mr. John Kamurinde, Counsel for the Applicant and in the absence of the Respondents, Betty Nambooze Bakireke and Lawrence Kiwanuka Nsereko and their Counsel.

The order further directs that the human remains of the late Maria Namirembe Angella, to be released by the Respondents to Mulago City Mortuary or any other registered mortuary/ funeral home until final disposal of MC No. 0235 of 2025.

“A paternity examination/DNA test shall be conducted by the Directorate of Government Analytical Laboratory (DGAL), Wandegeya. Within 4 days from the date of this order between the Applicant Mutebi Robert and the Human remains of Maria Namirembe Angella and submitted to this Court. The process of the paternity test shall be monitored by all the parties and their respective Counsel. Cost for the paternity test to be met by the Applicant.”

However, by the time the orders were issued, the remains of Namirembe were being laid to rest at the ancestral grounds belonging to one of the respondents, Lawrence Kiwanuka Nsereko in Jjalamba, Buwama sub-county in Mpigi district.

By press time, our reporter had not yet heard from the applicant, Robert Mutebi or his counsels on the way forward given the fact that the remains of the deceased had already been laid to rest.
