Robert Peter Kabanda of the National Unity Platform (NUP) has been declared winner of the Mukono Municipality mayoral race after beating four other candidates in a landslide victory.

Kabanda garnered 13,112 votes followed by NRM’s Micdad Mulimira who secured 5,054 yet the incumbent, Erisa Mukasa Nkoyoyo, an independent candidate only registered 2,283 votes.

Former presidential aspirant, Mathew Mutyaba who ran on an independent bid garnered 37 votes and Henry Ssenyonjo (independent), former Mukono Municipality parliamentary aspirant only secured 58 votes.

Mathew Mutyaba, who had earlier picked presidential nomination forms and was instead nominated as Mukono Municipality mayoral candidate.

A person with both physical and visual disability, Mutyaba was among the over 100 Ugandans who showed interest in aspiring for president of Uganda and went ahead to pick the show of interest forms but failed to fulfill the requirements including seeking the mandatory signatures from the specific percentage of voters across the country.

He therefore lowered his appetite to the post of Mukono Municipality mayor only to come last with only 37 votes.

This is not the first time Mutyaba is running for this very seat but he has repeatedly been rejected by the voters.

For Henry Ssenyonjo, he first picked interest in contesting on the post of Mukono Municipality MP but failed to raise the required sh3m fees, hence going for the mayoral office. Ssenyonjo has only secured 58 votes.

Kabanda has promised to start from where Nkoyoyo is going to stop, constructing more tarmacked roads with street lights and working on the issue of garbage collection, which is one of the biggest challenges for Mukono.

“As a councillor for some years and now chairperson for Mukono Central Division, I have been part of this development for Mukono right from the level of town council to municipality, because I know where Mukono is coming from, I there know where it is going in terms of development,” Kabanda said.

Kabanda has been declared today’s morning on Wednesday at 4:18am.
