“Such actions undermine the trust placed in leaders by the people and weaken the struggle for accountable and people-centered leadership,” the statement read.
The National Unity Platform (NUP) leadership in Mukono Municipality has announced disciplinary action against several of its councillors accused of defying the party position during the election of the Speaker of the Mukono Municipal Council.
In an official communication dated May 23, 2025, the party’s registrar for Mukono Municipality, Richard Kasiriivu Lugoloobi said the party was disappointed after some councillors allegedly voted in favour of a candidate from the ruling National Resistance Movement despite NUP holding the majority in council.
According to the NUP registrar’s statement, the council is composed of 18 NUP councillors and six NRM councillors. However, the NRM candidate reportedly emerged victorious in the speakership race after what the party described as “acts of betrayal” by some members within its ranks.

Despite the NRM having only six councillors in the council, its candidate, Constatine Kanga, emerged victorious in the speakership race after securing 13 votes, defeating NUP flag bearer Phibie Faith Babirye, who garnered 11 votes.
The party condemned the move, describing it as an act of indiscipline, disloyalty, and disregard for party values and principles.
“Such actions undermine the trust placed in leaders by the people and weaken the struggle for accountable and people-centered leadership,” the statement read.
NUP further revealed that disciplinary proceedings had already been initiated against the suspected councillors involved in the alleged betrayal. The affected individuals are expected to appear before the party’s disciplinary committee to explain their actions.

The statement urged party supporters and members to remain calm and united as the leadership handles the matter through established internal procedures.
Mukono Municipality Mayor Robert Peter Kabanda, who is also affiliated to the National Unity Platform, criticised the councillors’ actions, accusing some of them of being influenced by money and betraying the party’s struggle.
Meanwhile, Mukono District Woman MP Sheillah Draville Amaniyo acknowledged that the speakership results exposed internal challenges within the party. Amaniyo said the party leadership would, in due course, undertake internal arrangements to address the shortcomings.
