The Mukono District Health Department has held a colorful end-of-year celebration to recognize and appreciate dedicated health workers for their outstanding service in 2025.

The event, hosted at Grand Praclos Gardens Nasuuti in Mukono Municipality, brought together district health workers, political leaders, technical staff, and other invited guests in a show of unity and gratitude for the strides made in the health sector.

Among the distinguished guests was the Deputy Resident District Commissioner, Muyambi Moses, alongside district councilors led by Vice Chairperson Joremu Kabali Kimera, District Speaker Hon. Betty Hope Nakasi, the Chairperson of NRM Mukono Municipality, and the District Health Officer, Dr. Stephen Mulindwa. Health facility in-charges and district technical officers also attended.

In his remarks, Deputy RDC Muyambi commended the Health Department for organizing the celebration and applauded health workers for their tireless service to the people of Mukono and Uganda at large, despite numerous challenges. He urged them to remain steadfast in delivering quality healthcare services.

Addressing concerns surrounding the District Service Commission, he assured staff that under new leadership, steps are being taken to resolve pending issues to ensure smooth recruitment processes and prevent any loss of funds due to the commission’s absence.

He noted that although only a few staff members received awards for the year 2025, many others had performed exceptionally and would be recognized in future ceremonies. He encouraged those who missed out to remain committed and hopeful.

The Deputy RDC emphasized the importance of teamwork and effective communication among health facility heads to enhance service delivery. He cautioned against employing unqualified health workers in the absence of supervisors and called for integrity and professionalism across all facilities. In a special recognition, he applauded the in-charge of Ddamba Health Centre for her exceptional performance despite serving in a hard-to-reach area of Kkoome Islands in Koome sub-county.

Speaking on behalf of District Chairperson Rev. Peter Bakaluba Mukasa, his vice, Joram Kabali Kimera thanked health workers for their dedication to improving healthcare services in the district.

On the issue of the Service Commission, Kabali revealed that final reports had been submitted to the Public Service Commission and expressed optimism that recruitment processes would resume smoothly in the coming week.

Dr. Mulindwa explained that the end-of-year gathering was organized to allow health workers to interact and bond with fellow civil servants and political leaders, noting that many health professionals are rarely seen outside their workstations. He highlighted the emotional demands of the medical profession, where practitioners frequently handle patients facing critical challenges.

“Unlike other professions where interactions are often positive, health workers deal daily with sickness, emergencies, and loss. Events like this provide an opportunity for relaxation, stress relief, and open discussion of challenges,” he said.

The DHO acknowledged the health facility in-charges for their resilience despite staffing shortages and highlighted key achievements registered by the department in 2025, including reducing maternal deaths by half and strengthening emergency response services with four ambulances and trained personnel to handle urgent cases. He pledged renewed efforts in the coming year to further reduce maternal mortality.

The celebration concluded with the awarding of the best-performing health workers across different sectors, marking a moment of appreciation, unity, and renewed commitment to quality healthcare service delivery in Mukono District.
