Prison Warder on the Run After Fatal Shooting at Kiboga Prison Leaves Three Dead

In a press statement released on Monday, the Uganda Prisons Service described the tragedy as “the unfortunate death of three persons following a shooting incident at Kiboga Prison.”

A quiet Monday morning in central Uganda was shattered by gunfire, leaving a prison community in shock and mourning.

At approximately 10:00 hours, authorities say Prison Warder No. 13544 Anguyo Moses turned his weapon on his superiors at Kiboga Prison, fatally shooting three people in a sudden and devastating attack.

The victims were identified as Assistant Superintendent of Prisons Hope Catherine, the Deputy Officer in Charge; Principal Officer I Akishuri Bright, the third in command; and Ms. Ayebare Sarah, the spouse of the Officer in Charge.

Moments after the shooting, the suspect fled the facility, sparking an immediate security response. Officers from the Uganda Police Force were called to the scene, where they secured the premises and recovered the firearm used in the killings. Joint security teams have since launched a manhunt for the suspect, who remains at large and is considered dangerous.

Authorities have appealed to the public for assistance. “Anyone with valuable information regarding his whereabouts is urged to inform the Police,” the statement said, promising further updates as investigations continue.

The killings occurred within the confines of the prison facility in Kiboga District, sending ripples of fear and grief through both the corrections community and the wider public. While some early local media reports suggested additional casualties, the official release confirmed three fatalities.

The Uganda Prisons Service expressed deep regret over the loss of the officers and civilian, concluding its statement with a solemn tribute: “May the souls of the deceased rest in eternal peace.”

As the search intensifies for Warder Anguyo Moses, the incident has raised troubling questions about internal security and tensions within Uganda’s prison system. For now, a community waits for answers — and for justice.
