Preparation, Not Luck: Charles Peter Mayiga Urges Youth to Work for Success

“Success does not fall like rain,” he said. “It is earned through commitment, discipline, and hard work.”

Charles Peter Mayiga, the Katikkiro of the Buganda Kingdom, has urged young people to reject the belief that success comes by luck, emphasizing instead the importance of preparation, discipline, and hard work.

Speaking about the relationship between opportunity and achievement, through his X formally Tweeter handle, Mayiga stressed that success is rarely accidental. According to him, what many people describe as “luck” is often the result of preparation meeting opportunity.

Quoting a Luganda proverb, he explained: “Omukisa gusanga yeetegese,” meaning fortune finds the one who is prepared.

Mayiga questioned the common belief that success can be achieved through prayer alone. While acknowledging the importance of faith, he noted that prayer must be accompanied by deliberate effort and planning.

“You cannot simply spend the whole day and night praying for blessings and expect success to fall into your hands,” he said. “Prayer is important, but effort and preparation must accompany it.”

He explained that opportunities often appear unexpectedly, but only those who have prepared themselves are able to recognize and take advantage of them.

“What people call luck is simply a beneficial moment meeting someone who has already prepared themselves,” Mayiga noted.

Addressing the youth in particular, the Katikkiro urged them to focus on building skills, acquiring knowledge, and investing their time in productive activities.

“Success does not fall like rain,” he said. “It is earned through commitment, discipline, and hard work.”

He concluded by reminding young people that when preparation meets opportunity, observers may call it luck, but in reality it is the reward of consistent effort and readiness.
