A remand prisoner at Luzira Upper Prison has formally appealed for temporary release to attend the burial of his wife, who succumbed to cancer on Wednesday.

Alex Waiswa Mufumbiro, an accused person in two ongoing criminal cases before the Kawempe Chief Magistrate’s Court, submitted a written request through the Officer In-Charge of Upper Luzira Prison seeking permission to be released on humanitarian grounds.

Mufumbiro, who identifies himself as Accused No. 8 in Criminal Case No. 1363 of 2025 and also charged in Criminal Case No. 147 of 2026, has been on remand since September 8, 2025.

In his letter dated April 8, 2026, he states that he is currently facing charges of unlawful drilling before Grade One Magistrate Damalie Aguma Asiimwe. While still in custody, he was later charged with incitement to commit an offence in a separate case presided over by Chief Magistrate Ainembabazi Doreen.

He notes that despite several attempts by his lawyers to secure bail, including a mandatory bail application, all efforts have so far been unsuccessful. He is expected to reappear in court on April 10, 2026, for bail rulings in both cases.

Mufumbiro told authorities that he received news of the death of his wife, Edith Katende, who had been battling cancer for a long time. He added that in her final days, she expressed a wish for him to be by her side and to lay her to rest.

“It is the very reason I have decided to appeal to your office for my temporary release,” he wrote, adding that his request is rooted in a desire to fulfill what he described as his wife’s final wish.

He further appealed to the judicial authorities to consider granting him bail, emphasizing that he is willing to comply with any conditions that may be set for his temporary release.

“I approach not as a man who disregards the law, but as one seeking its most human and dignified expression,” the letter reads in part.

The request has been copied to the Principal Judge, the Director of Public Prosecutions, the Chief Magistrate of Kawempe, and his legal representatives, Alma Associated Advocates.

By press time, authorities had not yet issued a formal response to the request.
