The Uganda Police Force has taken disciplinary action against one of its officers after a video surfaced on social media showing the officer assaulting a civilian at the Central Police Station (CPS) Quarterguard in Kampala.

The footage, which quickly went viral, prompted widespread condemnation from the public and led to an official response from the police. In a statement issued via the Uganda Police’s official X (formerly Twitter) account, Kampala Metropolitan Police Spokesperson Rachael Kawala confirmed the incident and expressed the force’s firm stance against the officer’s behavior.

“Our attention was drawn to a video circulating on social media in which a police officer is seen assaulting a civilian at the CPS Quarter Guard in Kampala,” Kawala wrote.

While acknowledging that the victim and the officer have reconciled, Kawala emphasized that the conduct displayed in the video was unacceptable and contrary to the police force’s expected standards of professionalism.

“While we note that the victim and the officer have since reconciled, the conduct exhibited is unacceptable and falls short of the standards expected of our personnel,” Kawala continued. “Appropriate disciplinary action has been taken against the officer in accordance with the Police Disciplinary Code.”

The spokesperson also condemned the officer’s actions, stating that such behavior undermines public trust and runs counter to the core values of the Uganda Police Force. “We strongly condemn such behavior as it undermines public trust and contravenes the core values of professionalism,” Kawala added.

The incident has sparked discussions on the need for increased accountability and transparency within law enforcement agencies in Uganda.
