The request comes at a time when the detention and prosecution of opposition figures have continued to attract widespread scrutiny from political actors, civil society organizations, and sections of the public.
Gen. Salim Saleh has written to Chief of Defence Forces Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba requesting a comprehensive briefing on the detention and prosecution of opposition figures Dr. Kizza Besigye and Erias Lukwago.
In a handwritten note dated June 28, Gen. Saleh said the briefing is intended to equip Justice and Constitutional Affairs Minister Norbert Mao with sufficient information from the military and intelligence agencies to address public concerns surrounding the cases.
According to the note, Saleh emphasized the need for a coordinated government response, saying the minister requires a full account of the circumstances leading to the detention and prosecution of the two opposition leaders. The information, he noted, would enable Mao to provide informed explanations on the government’s position amid growing public interest in the matter.
The request comes at a time when the detention and prosecution of opposition figures have continued to attract widespread scrutiny from political actors, civil society organizations, and sections of the public.
Neither the Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF), the Justice Ministry, nor the military leadership had publicly commented on Saleh’s request by the time of publication.
It also remains unclear when the requested briefing will be held or whether its findings will be made public.
