Bus Driver Killed, 15 Injured as School Bus Crashes into Stationary Trailer

A bus driver has been reported dead and 15 people, including students and a teacher, injured after a school bus collided with the rear of a stationary trailer along the Mbale–Iganga Highway in Bugweri District on Tuesday morning.

 

The fatal crash occurred at around 4:45 a.m. on July 14, 2026, at Nawangisa Village and involved an Isuzu bus, registration number UA 551ED, and a Mercedes-Benz Actros trailer, registration number UBB 269V.

 

According to Police, the Isuzu bus, owned by Amuria High School, was transporting 73 students from St. Paul Secondary School in Katakwi District to Kasenyi Landing Site in Entebbe for a geography study tour when it rammed into the rear of the stationary trailer.

The deceased has been identified as Kasakya Abdallah, 68, the driver of the bus, who died instantly in the collision.

 

The injured include 13 students, one teacher and the bus conductor. They sustained injuries of varying severity and were rushed to Iganga General Hospital for treatment.

 

A team of traffic officers led by the Regional Traffic Officer visited the scene, documented the crash and commenced investigations. The body of the deceased was taken to Iganga Hospital Mortuary for a postmortem examination.

 

Both the bus and the trailer were towed to Busembatya Police Station, where they will undergo mechanical inspection as investigations into the exact cause of the crash continue.

 

In a statement, Busoga East Regional Police Spokesperson ASP Michael Kasadha extended condolences to the family of the deceased and wished the injured a quick recovery.

 

Police have also urged all road users to exercise maximum caution, strictly observe traffic regulations and remain vigilant on the roads to help prevent similar tragedies.
