Man Arrested After Allegedly Posing as Female Domestic Worker to Steal from Employers

The Uganda Police Force has urged the public to exercise caution when recruiting domestic workers and other household employees.

A man is in police custody at Nateete Police Station after allegedly disguising himself as a female domestic worker to gain employment and steal from unsuspecting employers.

 

The suspect, identified as Kayaga Rayan, is accused of posing as “Namirembe Rukia” while applying for jobs as a housemaid. According to preliminary police investigations, he allegedly admitted during interrogation that he had been disguising himself as a woman to secure domestic work with the intention of stealing from employers.

Police say the suspect was most recently employed at a residence in Mutundwe, Rubaga Division, Kampala District, where he is alleged to have stolen sh1.7m from his employers.

 

His arrest came after security personnel at a church in Mutundwe conducted a routine security screening before the start of a church service. During the screening, the suspect was apprehended, prompting his employers to discover that sh1.7m was missing from their home. The matter was immediately reported to the police.

 

Investigators are treating the suspect’s alleged confession as part of ongoing inquiries and are working to establish whether he may have been involved in similar incidents elsewhere.

Kayaga remains in police custody as investigations continue. He is expected to be arraigned in court once police complete their inquiries.

 

The Uganda Police Force has urged the public to exercise caution when recruiting domestic workers and other household employees. Police advised employers to verify the identities, backgrounds and references of prospective workers wherever possible and to promptly report any suspicious activity to the nearest police station.
