14 Killed, 28 Injured in Night Bus-Truck Collision on Kampala–Gulu Highway

Police confirmed that 14 people died in the crash, while 28 others sustained injuries of varying severity. The injured were rushed to various medical facilities for treatment as emergency responders worked through the night to rescue survivors and clear the wreckage.

Fourteen people have been confirmed dead and 28 others injured following a horrific road crash involving a passenger bus and a trailer at Bobi Trading Centre along the Kampala–Gulu Highway.

According to Michael Kananura, the spokesperson of Traffic and Road Safety Directorate, the fatal crash occurred on Tuesday, July 7, 2026, at about 9:34 p.m. and involved an Isuzu bus, registration number UBE 110H, belonging to OPIT Travellers Company, and a Mercedes-Benz Actros trailer, registration numbers KBS 564D and ZE 7948.

Preliminary investigations indicate that the bus driver, who was allegedly speeding, attempted to avoid hitting a pedestrian who was crossing the road at Bobi Trading Centre. In the process, the driver reportedly lost control of the bus, which veered into the opposite lane and collided head-on with the oncoming trailer.

“The driver of the bus who was allegedly speeding attempted to avoid a pedestrian crossing the road, lost control of the vehicle and collided head-on with the oncoming trailer,” Kananura said.

Traffic police have launched investigations to establish the full circumstances surrounding the crash.

Following the incident, the Traffic and Road Safety Directorate appealed to motorists to observe speed limits, particularly during night travel when visibility is significantly reduced.

Police also urged drivers to remain vigilant in trading centres, where pedestrian activity is common, and to drive at speeds that allow them to stop safely in case of unexpected hazards.

The latest tragedy adds to the growing number of fatal road crashes on Uganda’s highways, renewing calls for greater adherence to traffic regulations and responsible driving to reduce loss of life on the country’s roads.
