Mukono Grade One Magistrate on Friday charged and remanded a 25-year-old teacher of Mother’s Pride Nursery and Primary School in Gulama village, Goma Division in Mukono Municipality over aggravated defilement.

Court identified the suspect as Nathan Odeke who was charged with aggravated defilement of a 16-year-old Primary Six pupil.

Magistrate Paise Ahurira remanded Odeke to Luzira prison until July 28 when he will reappear for mention of his case.

Odeke is accused of sexually abusing the minor in two separate occasions. According to court proceedings, the first incident allegedly occurred in May 2026 when Odeke reportedly expressed romantic interest in the pupil before following her into the girls’ dormitory during break time, where he forcefully engaged her into sexual intercourse.

The second alleged assault took place on July 10, 2026. Prosecution alleges that while the rest of the teachers and pupils were away in Tororo attending the head teacher’s introduction ceremony, Odeke is said to have tricked the girl by asking her to take him drinking water to class.

It is alleged that after delivering the glass of water, Odeke again grabbed the victim and defiled her again. A fellow male pupil who was passing by is said to have witnessed the act and reported the matter to another teacher, calling for his arrest.

State prosecutor Babra Anguzu told the court that investigations into the case have been completed.

Magistrate Ahurira explained that aggravated defilement is a serious offence beyond the jurisdiction of her court, therefore denying him any chance of making any plea before her. She noted, however, that the accused retains the right to apply for bail at the High Court, which has the authority to handle such matters.

Odeke remains in custody and will return to court on July 28 for further proceedings.

The case has raised fresh concerns about the safety of learners in Ugandan schools, particularly the vulnerability of girls to sexual exploitation by individuals entrusted with their care. Child protection advocates have repeatedly called for stricter vetting of school staff and enhanced supervision in boarding facilities to prevent such incidents.
