After evaluating the evidence, the High Court found Kalyowa guilty of defiling his daughter and sentenced him to 40 years’ imprisonment.
The Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) has secured the conviction and sentencing of a man to 40 years in prison for the aggravated defilement of his 12-year-old daughter.
Haruna Kalyowa was convicted by the High Court after prosecutors proved that he sexually assaulted his daughter in 2021 at Sembule Zone, Kabowa Parish, in Rubaga Division, Kampala District.
Court heard that the victim was living with her father and stepmother at the time of the offence. On the day of the incident, the stepmother left home to take her baby for immunisation, leaving the victim behind.
Taking advantage of her absence, Kalyowa sexually assaulted his daughter. However, the offence was interrupted when the stepmother returned home after realising that she had forgotten the baby’s immunisation card and found Kalyowa in the act.
Following the incident, Kalyowa moved to another residence within the same parish. The victim later disclosed that her father had sexually abused her on more than four occasions.
In 2023, after resisting further sexual advances from her father, the girl confided in a school friend about the abuse. The information was subsequently brought to the attention of adults, including her biological mother, leading to Kalyowa’s arrest in June 2023.
During the trial, Kalyowa denied the allegations and claimed they stemmed from family wrangles. The prosecution, however, called seven witnesses whose evidence established his culpability.
After evaluating the evidence, the High Court found Kalyowa guilty of defiling his daughter and sentenced him to 40 years’ imprisonment.
The case was prosecuted by Senior State Attorney Carol Tabaro before Justice David Matovu of the High Court.
The ODPP said the conviction demonstrates its commitment to holding perpetrators of sexual violence against children accountable and ensuring that vulnerable victims obtain justice through the criminal justice system.
