A 14-year-old student has died after being struck by lightning at Nakaswa Secondary School in Kasawo Sub-county, Mukono District.
The incident occurred on Thursday, September 17, 2026, at about 6:30am as students were returning to their dormitory from morning prayers.
According to Kampala Metropolitan Police, the students were walking together when it started raining and lightning reportedly struck them.
The deceased was identified as Ocaya Uthuman Nasuru, who died at the scene. Other students who were with him survived the incident.
Police at Naggalama have commenced investigations into the circumstances surrounding the student’s death.

Police are also reviewing available CCTV footage as part of the investigations.
The school has been advised to consider installing additional lightning arresters to enhance the safety of students and staff.
Owoyesigyire urged the public, particularly schools and parents, to take lightning risks seriously as the rainy season continues.

Police advised people to seek shelter inside strong, enclosed buildings whenever they hear thunder or see lightning, and warned against standing under trees or remaining in open and exposed areas such as sports fields, hilltops and other open spaces during thunderstorms.
The public was also advised to stay away from water bodies and swimming pools and avoid touching electrical appliances, wiring, metal structures and plumbing during thunderstorms.
Schools and other institutions have been encouraged to install and regularly maintain appropriate lightning protection systems, including lightning arresters.
For people caught outdoors without immediate access to shelter, police advised them to move away from isolated trees, poles and other tall objects and avoid lying flat on the ground.
Police further advised the public to remain indoors for at least 30 minutes after the last sound of thunder.
Owoyesigyire said further information would be provided as investigations into the incident progress.
