Uganda Christian University (UCU) has won the regional rounds of the Unwanted Witness Privacy Moot Competition after defeating Tanzania’s University of Dar es Salaam in a closely contested final.
The victory, secured at UCU’s main campus in Mukono, earned Team UCU a cash prize of $1,500 and a fully funded trip to Accra, Ghana, to attend the 2026 Africa Privacy Symposium.
The win marks UCU’s second consecutive triumph in the competition, following its victory in the 2025 edition held in Tanzania.
The prizes were handed over to the winners by the Minister for ICT and National Guidance, Justine Kasule Lumumba, at the conclusion of the competition.
This year’s regional competition attracted more than 40 universities from Uganda, Kenya, Rwanda and Tanzania, with teams competing on issues surrounding privacy and data protection.
Lumumba commended Unwanted Witness Uganda for maintaining the competition for five years, saying its consistency had helped provide a platform for university students to develop their knowledge and practical skills in privacy and data protection.
Dorothy Mukasa, the Executive Director of Unwanted Witness Uganda, said the initiative aims to build a pool of young lawyers from different law schools with a strong understanding of digital rights.
“It is important that we build a pool of young lawyers who understand privacy and data protection. We are trying to build a movement of young lawyers who can advance these rights,” she said.
She said the initiative is not limited to Ugandan law schools but extends across East Africa, bringing together law students from different countries in the region.
The judges also praised the quality of the participating mooters, describing their performances as extremely strong throughout the competition.
Team UCU’s victory further cements the university’s record in the regional moot competition, having successfully defended its title after last year’s triumph in Tanzania.
