President Museveni Honours Former Mukono TC Chairperson Charles Ssemanda

Representing the Inspector General of Police, the Regional Police Commander for the Savannah Region, Barnard Mugerwa praised Ssemanda for raising his children well.

President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has honoured the legacy of former Mukono Town Board and Town Council Chairperson, Charles Ssemanda, describing him as a committed National Resistance Movement (NRM) member who maintained cordial relations with people across the political divide.

Museveni contributed sh10m towards Ssemanda’s burial and sent a condolence message to the family, which was delivered by Mukono District NRM chairman Haji Haruna Ssemakula during the burial at Kakuba village in Nakisunga, Mukono district on Wednesday.

The retired bishop of Central Buganda diocese, Jackson Matovu used the burial to call on political and community leaders to emulate Ssemanda’s integrity, humility and commitment to serving the people.

Preaching from Revelation 20:12–15, Bishop Matovu described Ssemanda as a humble, honest, generous and soft-spoken man who loved God, the Church and his community.

The call to preserve Ssemanda’s legacy was echoed by Bp. James William Ssebaggala, the retired bishop of Mukono diocese, who encouraged the deceased’s children to remember their father’s good deeds and build on the foundation he left behind.

The Minister of Public Service, Rtd. Gen. Edward Katumba Wamala also asked mourners to reflect on the lessons from Ssemanda’s life and urged his children to safeguard the good name their father left behind.

Representing the Inspector General of Police, the Regional Police Commander for the Savannah Region, Barnard Mugerwa praised Ssemanda for raising his children well.

Mugerwa particularly cited Ssemanda’s son, Christopher Ssendijja, the current Divisional Police Commander of Nakaseke, as an example of the values instilled in the family by the late leader.

Mukono Municipality MP Betty Nambooze Bakireke praised Ssemanda for his contribution to the growth and development of Mukono Municipality, saying many of the achievements associated with the municipality were built through his efforts.

At the family level, Ssemanda’s children described him as a visionary father who valued faith, humility, discipline and service.

Speaking on behalf of the children, William Bujingo thanked the people who supported their father throughout his public service, particularly during his tenure as Mayor of Mukono.

Timothy Kuteesa, on behalf of his grandchildren described his Jjajja as a loving grandfather who placed a strong emphasis on education and worked hard to give his grandchildren opportunities to study.

Ssemanda, who died of pneumonia, was born on March 23, 1947, to the late Miriam Babirye and the late Finekasi Kiwanuka Kyeyune.

He has been married to Robinah Florence Nansubuga Ssemanda for 59 years, and together God blessed them with children and grandchildren.

He attended Bishop’s School before training in electrical installation at Kyambogo Technical College. In 1972, he travelled to Kenya, where he obtained a diploma in procurement.

He later served as a procurement officer in Mukono District with responsibilities covering Mukono, Bugerere, Buikwe and Nakasongola.

Beyond public service, Ssemanda was also a pioneer entrepreneur. He established a wood workshop in what is now Mukono Industrial Area, where he manufactured wooden truck carry beds.

He also contributed to the establishment and growth of the YMCA in Greater Mukono, supporting trade schools and vocational training opportunities for young people.

At the time of his death, Ssemanda was chairman of the School Management Committee at Bishop’s West Boarding Primary School, a Church of Uganda-founded institution under Mukono Diocese.

His life, religious faith, political service, entrepreneurship and community work left a legacy that leaders at his burial urged the younger generation to preserve and emulate.
