The Government has also pledged to fully sponsor the late musician’s daughter, who is currently a fourth-year medical student at the Islamic University in Uganda (IUIU).
The Government has pledged to honour the legacy of legendary Afrigo Band musician Moses Matovu by commemorating his contribution to Uganda’s creative industry and supporting his family.
The commitments were communicated by the Executive Director of the Uganda Communications Commission (UCC), George William Nyombi Thembo, following a visit to the late musician’s family on Wednesday evening.
Thembo said he accompanied the State Minister for ICT, Joyce Nabbosa Ssebugwawo, to deliver President Yoweri Museveni’s condolences to the family of Matovu, popularly known as “Papa Moi.”
According to Thembo, the President has committed to ensuring that Matovu’s contribution to Uganda’s creative industry is officially recognised.
He said plans are underway to organise an official commemoration of the musician’s contribution and construct a family residence on his land in Mukono, with the initiative to be coordinated through UCC.
The Government has also pledged to fully sponsor the late musician’s daughter, who is currently a fourth-year medical student at the Islamic University in Uganda (IUIU).
Thembo said the sponsorship will cover her remaining tuition fees as well as the costs of her medical internship.
He said the commitments reaffirm the Government’s intention to preserve Matovu’s legacy while supporting his family following his death.
Matovu, a veteran musician and co-founder of Afrigo Band, died on September 24, 2026, following an attack in Kampala. His death triggered widespread tributes from the music industry, Government and the public.
UCC is the communications sector regulator and is headed by Nyombi Thembo as Executive Director.
“May the soul of the legendary Moses Matovu (Papa Moi) rest in eternal peace,” Thembo said.
