The Patriotic League of Uganda (PLU) has suspended Frank Gashumba with immediate effect over concerns about his conduct and statements regarding religious groups, particularly allegations of attacks against Balokole and Pentecostal churches.
In a letter dated October 19, 2026, and signed by the party’s National Vice Chairman, Michael Kaguta Toyota, PLU said the suspension was intended to allow an investigation into the allegations through its internal disciplinary procedures.
The letter, addressed to Gashumba, cited concerns raised with the party management over his conduct and statements concerning the religious communities.
“Numerous concerns have been brought to the attention of the management of the Patriotic League of Uganda regarding your conduct and statements concerning the Balokole and Pentecostal churches, particularly allegations of attacks against these religious communities,” the letter reads.

The party said it was committed to protecting the rights and freedoms of all Ugandans, including freedom of worship, religious expression and peaceful assembly as guaranteed by the Constitution.
It also acknowledged the role of religious institutions in promoting moral values, social harmony, peace and the well-being of communities.
“The management of the Patriotic League of Uganda has therefore sat and decided that these concerns must be addressed through the appropriate internal disciplinary procedures,” the letter states.
PLU said it had requested a formal investigation into the allegations as part of the disciplinary process.
Gashumba was advised to cooperate fully with the relevant authorities and comply with any interim administrative measures communicated to him while the investigation and internal procedures are pending.
The party added that political leadership should be exercised responsibly, with respect for the law and the rights and freedoms of every citizen, regardless of religious affiliation.
“Much as we appreciate and value the sacrifices and contributions of our staff, Patriotic Officers and Patriotic Cadres, we take matters concerning our core principles and values seriously,” the letter states.

It added that the period away from the party would provide Gashumba an opportunity for reflection, corrective action and alignment with the organisation’s principles.
The letter was copied to the PLU general secretary, the vice chairman for the Central Region and the deputy director of mobilisation.
The suspension follows allegations concerning Gashumba’s statements about Balokole and Pentecostal churches. However, the letter does not provide details of the specific statements or incidents that prompted the disciplinary action.
Gashumba’s response to the suspension was not included in the letter.
The investigation is expected to establish the circumstances surrounding the allegations before the party determines the next course of action.
