The Vice Chairperson of the Patriotic League of Uganda (PLU) in charge of Buganda, Frank Gashumba, has suggested that the property belonging to former Speaker of Parliament Anita Annet Among should be confiscated and sold if she is found guilty of the corruption-related allegations currently facing her.

Speaking in a viral video circulating on social media, Gashumba claimed that although many people had allegedly looted public resources in Uganda, Among’s mistake was openly displaying her wealth.

“I say this again: Anita does not belong to the first 50 thieves that have looted this country. People have looted this country beyond repair. But they were very smart; they hid each and everything that they have stolen. Unfortunately for her, she was out showing each and everything,” Gashumba said.

He questioned the source of the former Speaker’s wealth, arguing that the speed at which she allegedly accumulated property and money had raised public concern.

Gashumba also criticised what he described as excessive public spending and donations by Among, comparing them to contributions made by President Yoweri Museveni at various events.

“President Museveni would donate sh20m and Anita would donate sh100m. There are instances where she donated sh1 billion,” he said.

The outspoken commentator further argued that corruption in Uganda had evolved into what he termed “broad day robbery,” calling for tougher action against public officials accused of mismanaging taxpayer funds.

“My happiest day will be when I see one vampire arrested, taken to court, remanded to Luzira and everything confiscated from them,” he added.

Among is currently facing investigations and allegations related to corruption, illicit enrichment, unexplained wealth, and money laundering. She is also accused of breaching the Leadership Code Act through alleged failure to declare or under-declaration of her wealth.

The former Speaker has previously denied wrongdoing in several of the accusations that have been raised publicly against her.
