The Bishop of Mukono Diocese, Enos Kitto Kagodo, has urged schools to place greater emphasis on introducing and strengthening religious chaplaincy, noting its vital role in providing holistic pastoral, spiritual, and emotional support to both students and teachers.

Bishop Kagodo said that relying solely on academic instruction without incorporating chaplaincy to guide learners morally and spiritually could create more challenges in schools.

“Producing academic giants who do not know God is dangerous; it will lead our country into a dilemma. Let us involve religious leaders and bring them closer to school administration,” he said.

The bishop made the remarks on Friday while leading a confirmation service at Our Lady of Africa Senior School, located in Ddandira Cell, Mukono Central Division in Mukono Municipality.

He emphasized that religious chaplaincy offers comprehensive support to students, staff, and families, promoting well-being regardless of personal beliefs. Chaplains, he noted, serve as mentors and trusted figures who help address issues such as bullying, anxiety, and low self-esteem among students and staff.

Bishop Kagodo also commended private schools for their role in educating Uganda’s growing number of learners, acknowledging that government institutions alone cannot meet the demand.

“I commend private schools for raising education standards as we all see. However, they should not only focus on producing academic excellence but also pay attention to the spiritual well-being of their students and staff,” he added.

He expressed concern that neglecting religious guidance in schools contributes to moral decline in society, citing issues such as teachers misconduct, corruption among civil servants, and growing indiscipline among youth.

The school’s headteacher, Paul Kasumba, informed the bishop that the institution already has a chaplain who plays a significant role in supporting both learners and staff. However, he requested prayers for staff members, noting that many are not legally married despite living with partners.

“We understand the importance of legally recognized marriages and support staff who wish to formalize their unions. Unfortunately, only a few have taken that step,” Kasumba said.

Dr. Lilian Matovu, the principal of Our Lady of Africa Schools, reaffirmed the institution’s commitment to both academic excellence and the spiritual and moral development of learners.

“As a faith-based institution, we strive to nurture compassionate young people guided by strong Christian values. Your visit today reminds us of the important role the Church plays in shaping the lives of our learners. Your sermon has impacted not only the students but also our staff,” she said.

The bishop was accompanied by the Archdeacon of Nassuuti Archdeaconry, Rev. Kenneth Kampi Lukwago; the Ddandira Parish Priest, Rev. Samuel Micah Lukwago Migavu; Rev. Patrick Bakabulindi; and other clergy members.
