Bishop Worried Over a Clique of People Discouraging Coffee Growing in Buganda

The Church of Uganda Bishop for Mityana Diocese Dr. James Bukomeko has revealed that there are unnamed individuals discouraging farmers in the area from engaging in Coffee growing as advised by both Mengo and the central government.

Bp. Bukomeko made the report to the Katikkiro of Buganda Charles Peter Mayiga who was on a round of launching the first season of coffee planting this year in Ssingo County.

The Katikkiro also inspected farmers’ individual coffee plantations; and was received by Bishop Bukomeko at his two-acre plantation.

At this point, Katikkiro attacked religious leaders who ask believers to spend days in the church searching for blessings at the cost of sparing some time to engage in some income generating activities in their homes.

The Katikkiro said that this year, ther target is seeing mechanised agriculture especially by co-operative groups, irrigation, and urging people to consume their coffee in their homes.

He held a discussion with members of Myanzi Coffee Farmers Savings and Credit Co-operative Society Ltd at Kassanda, where their leader  Dauda Bukenya told the Katikkiro that they have earmarked sh300m to assemble a coffee huller.

Buganda Minister for Agriculture Haji Amisi Kakomo disclosed that coffee amounts have risen to 40 percent which he added, has further boosted the national coffers. Kakomo appealed to farmers to grow more coffee.

Mayega was welcomed by members of parliament including Frank Kabuye (Kassanda South), Flavia Nabagabe (Kassanda Woman) and Patrick Nsamba Oshabe (Kassanda North). They variously told him that residents in the area live in constant fear of losing their land in the on-going land grabbing scare.
