Residents of Lyabaana Town Council in Buvuma District have received, with profound shock, news of the passing of their chairperson, Bashir Ssenfuma.

Ssenfuma is reported to have succumbed to cancer after a period of illness during which he was admitted to the Uganda Cancer Institute in Mulago.

He had served as chairperson of Lyabaana Town Council since 2021 and was re-elected in the most recent local government elections. A prominent fisherman, Ssenfuma dedicated much of his life to fighting illegal fishing on the lake.

Ssenfuma was known as a people-centered leader who listened to his constituents and actively promoted a culture of saving among residents to support household wealth creation.

Buvuma Member of Parliament Robert Migadde Ndugwa has joined his constituents in mourning the late Lyabaana Town Council chairperson, Bashir Ssenfuma, describing him as a hardworking leader who championed development in his own unique way.

“We are saddened by the death of our own, Bashir Ssenfuma. He has been one of the few leaders who consistently stood for what is right, even when he stood alone. It is unfortunate that at a time when we need more leaders of his stature, we have lost him. This is a very big loss for both the leadership and the people of Buvuma. May his soul rest in peace,” he said.

According to tentative burial arrangements, his body will be transported from the hospital to his home in Lugazi, where it will lie in vigil overnight. Burial is scheduled to take place on Tuesday in Nkokonjeru Town Council.
