Chinese National Arrested for Frauding Over sh4.5bn from Ugandans

Police have arrested a Chinese National who is among the group which got involved into allegations of fraud by Acclaim BLQ Sports. According to the deputy Police spokesperson, Polly Namaye, Yinghe Chen (43) has today June 22, 2023 been arrested by a team from the Directorate of CID. Chen is a resident of UCB Zone in Bukoto 1, Nakawa Division in Kampala District.

Namaye says that his arrest follows an interagency investigation by the National Cyber TaskForce into allegations of fraud by Acclaim BLQ Sports SMC, with its five subsidiary companies.

The National Cyber Taskforce is comprised of CID, Crime Intelligence (CI), ISO, ESO, CMI, Bank of Uganda, NIRA, NITA Uganda, Uganda Banker Association, among others.

“This brings the number of those arrested in relation to this fraud to five people. On May 11, 2023, Police arrested Awori Mary, the wife to Yinghe Chen and the registered Director of Acclaim BLQ Sports SMC. On June 12, 2023, Police arrested Akoth Justine Oboth, Achola Mary, and Biira Shamim. These four suspects were all produced in court and charged accordingly,” she said.

She added that the estimated number of fraud victims stands at 6000 Ugandans with losses of over sh4.5bn. Acclaim BLQ Sports SMC operated under the slogan ” You lose, You win” which is believed to have attracted many people to the online betting company.

Namaye noted: “The Directorate of CID is working closely with DPP to ensure that Yinghe Chen is produced to court after investigations. The Police takes these public interest cases very seriously and we encourage all members of the public who have useful information relating to this investigation to share it with the nearest Police.”
