Meanwhile, the school headteacher, Abraham Akampurira, said the arrested students were among 11 learners suspended on Monday after they allegedly attempted to escape from the school over the weekend.

Eight Senior Four students of Kigezi High School in Kabale District have been arrested for allegedly inciting violence during the ongoing Uganda Certificate of Education (UCE) examinations, following a mini-strike in which school property was reportedly damaged.

Kigezi Region Police spokesperson Nelson Tumushime said the suspects were being detained at Kabale Central Police Station as investigations into the incident continued.

“The arrests follow a mini-strike at the school during which windowpanes and a CCTV camera were allegedly destroyed,” Tumushime said.

He said police responded swiftly to restore order, adding that efforts were underway to arrest other suspects who may have been involved in the incident.

Tumushime said police deployment at the school had been maintained to prevent further disruptions and ensure the safety of students and school property.

He described those involved as a small group of troublemakers who should not be allowed to disrupt learning and examinations for other candidates.

Meanwhile, the school headteacher, Abraham Akampurira, said the arrested students were among 11 learners suspended on Monday after they allegedly attempted to escape from the school over the weekend.

Akampurira said the students appeared before the school disciplinary committee, which resolved to suspend them over the incident.

“The students were summoned before the school disciplinary committee, which resolved to suspend them. The students later returned to the school and attempted to destabilise operations, mainly targeting security guards,” he said.

The circumstances surrounding the students’ return to the school and the subsequent unrest remain subject to investigations.

The incident comes as Senior Four candidates continue to sit their UCE examinations, which started last week. The affected students have not yet completed their examinations.

The arrests have raised concerns about the disruption of school activities during the national examinations, when candidates are expected to maintain discipline and concentrate on completing their papers.
