A recently surfaced photograph of former Speaker of Parliament Anita Annet Among has sparked renewed public discussion about her health, adding momentum to reports that she may be dealing with a serious medical condition.
The image, widely circulated on social media platforms, appears to show Among receiving medical care in a private residence. In the photograph, her feet are heavily wrapped in bandages while she is connected to an intravenous drip, prompting widespread concern and speculation about her wellbeing.
The photo emerged shortly after unverified claims suggested that the former Speaker had developed a condition affecting her mobility. While no official medical report has been released, the image has intensified public interest and fueled calls for greater clarity regarding her health status.
Questions about Among’s condition gained national attention after former Kampala Central legislator Muhammad Nsereko publicly alleged that she was seriously ill. Speaking during a TikTok livestream on June 22, Nsereko claimed he had recently visited her and witnessed significant swelling in her legs.
According to him, the situation raised humanitarian concerns that should transcend political divisions. He also alleged that Among could be suffering from deep vein thrombosis, a condition involving blood clots, though no medical evidence was presented to support the claim.
The remarks quickly spread online, generating mixed reactions from Ugandans across the political spectrum.
Bukedea County MP David Beecham Okwere later confirmed that he had visited Among at her residence in Nakasero and observed swelling in her feet. However, he cautioned against exaggerating the severity of her condition.
Okwere said that although she appeared to be experiencing health challenges, she was still able to move around within her home. He emphasized that only medical professionals could determine the cause of the swelling and urged the public to avoid speculation.

Kumi Municipality MP Silas Ogon also weighed into the debate, stressing that Among remains a serving Member of Parliament and is entitled to medical benefits provided by Parliament.
He suggested that the central issue may not be financial support for treatment but whether she has unrestricted access to the healthcare services she requires.
The growing discussion has exposed sharply contrasting public opinions. Many Ugandans have called for compassion, arguing that access to medical care is a basic right that should not be influenced by political affiliations or personal disagreements.
Others have questioned the outpouring of sympathy, pointing to controversies that surrounded Among during her tenure as Speaker and arguing that similar concern was not always extended to political opponents facing difficulties.
Beyond the political debate, the situation has reignited conversations about Uganda’s healthcare system and the tendency of senior public officials to seek treatment abroad when confronted with serious illnesses.
Commentators and analysts have argued that confidence in local health institutions should be demonstrated by leaders themselves, while others maintain that every citizen deserves access to the highest standard of care available, regardless of where it is provided.
Mental health experts have also highlighted the personal challenges that can accompany public life, noting that health problems, legal battles and intense public scrutiny can place significant emotional strain on individuals who once held powerful positions.
Medical professionals, meanwhile, have urged caution, warning that photographs alone cannot provide an accurate diagnosis. They note that swelling in the legs can result from a wide range of medical conditions and that only a thorough clinical assessment can establish the true cause.
As speculation continues, neither Among, her family nor her representatives have issued an official statement addressing the reports. Until such clarification is provided, public discussion is likely to persist, driven by concern, political debate and ongoing questions about healthcare access and accountability.
For now, the leaked photograph remains at the center of a national conversation that extends beyond one individual’s health, touching on issues of compassion, leadership, public perception and the challenges faced by those navigating life after high office.
