“Support a colleague who is battling breast cancer, please. Dr. Nalubega Rebecca is a Lecturer at Makerere University. We can save her life. Contribute, retweet and share widely. Thank you,” Prof. Ssentongo appealed.
The Makerere University community has launched an urgent appeal for support to help Dr. Rebecca Nalubega, a lecturer at the College of Veterinary Medicine, Animal Resources and Biosecurity (CoVAB), who is courageously battling breast cancer.
According to a fundraising appeal circulating among colleagues, friends, and well-wishers, Dr. Nalubega has already undergone six cycles of chemotherapy. However, medical assessments reportedly revealed progression of the disease, prompting doctors to recommend a more potent targeted cancer treatment.
The appeal indicates that Dr. Nalubega requires ten treatment cycles, each costing approximately UGX 4.68 million and administered every three weeks. While her medical insurance initially supported her treatment, the cover has since been exhausted, leaving her dependent on the generosity of colleagues, friends, and the wider public.

Fellow academics and members of the Makerere community have since intensified efforts to raise the required funds. Among those leading the campaign is Prof. Jimmy Spire Ssentongo, a lecturer at Makerere University, who has called on Ugandans and well-wishers to stand with their colleague in her hour of need.
“Support a colleague who is battling breast cancer, please. Dr. Nalubega Rebecca is a Lecturer at Makerere University. We can save her life. Contribute, retweet and share widely. Thank you,” Prof. Ssentongo appealed.
The campaign underscores the growing burden of breast cancer in Uganda, where health experts continue to advocate for early detection and access to timely treatment. Studies conducted by researchers affiliated with Makerere University have highlighted the significant challenges breast cancer patients face in accessing care and treatment, particularly due to financial constraints.

Organizers of the fundraising drive say every contribution, regardless of size, can make a difference in helping Dr. Nalubega continue her treatment journey. They are urging members of the university fraternity, alumni, corporate organizations, and the general public to contribute and share the appeal widely.
As the campaign gains momentum, colleagues describe Dr. Nalubega as a dedicated educator whose commitment to teaching and service has impacted many students and professionals. They hope the collective support of the community will give her a renewed chance to overcome the disease and return to the work she loves.
“Together, we can make a difference,” the appeal states, emphasizing that every donation brings hope and moves Dr. Nalubega one step closer to recovery.
