The Lira Chief Magistrate’s Court has sentenced a man to eight years in prison after finding him guilty of attempting to murder his former girlfriend, the reigning Miss Lira University, and her brother.
Daniel Oceng was convicted over a violent attack on Rita Kia and her brother, Emmanuel Odongo, following a domestic dispute earlier this year.
According to court records, the incident occurred in February after Oceng allegedly confronted Kia following the breakdown of their romantic relationship. During the attack, he attempted to kill the former girlfriend, prompting her brother, Emmanuel Odongo, to intervene.
Odongo sustained injuries while trying to rescue his sister from the assault.

After hearing the evidence presented by the prosecution, the Lira Chief Magistrate’s Court found Oceng guilty of attempted murder and sentenced him to eight years’ imprisonment.
The court said the sentence reflected the seriousness of the offence and served as a warning against acts of domestic and gender-based violence.
The conviction has been welcomed by members of the public, with many describing it as a strong message that violent attacks arising from relationship disputes will not be tolerated.
Authorities have continued to urge couples experiencing relationship conflicts to seek peaceful and lawful means of resolving their differences rather than resorting to violence.
