NRM secretariat on Saturday January 25, 2025 launched the second phase of the party register display and verification with a call to members to fully participate and notice ghosts and none members.

The countrywide exercise is slated to take effect at the village level right from Wednesday January 29, 2025.

The party secretariat last month undertook the digitisation of the 18 million and above members.

The NRM vice chairperson for the Eastern Region, Capt. Mike Mukula, who presided over the launch of the display exercise, tasked all party members to cross-check their details with the village registrars beginning Wednesday, 29th, to avoid missing out on participating in the structure and primary elections.

“The register is very vital in ensuring transparent and credible primary elections of flag bearers and building a strong party up to the grassroots,” Capt. Mukula said.

The NRM Secretary General, Richard Todwong told the party administrators and registrars of the districts who had convened at the party headquarters for the launch of the exercise to commit more time and energies in ensuring a clean register.

Some of the NRM district admins who attended the launch at the secretariat on Saturday.

Todwong noted that this second phase of the display and update exercise is aimed at achieving rectification of the mishaps that arose from the first round conducted last year.

“We had several registers that were handled inappropriately with some having ghost members whose identification details were scanty while in some instances, registrars were bribed by party members to register ghost members in those individuals’ interest. We are determined to collect all that mess,” Todwong said.

The exercise will also give chances to members, including the students who were at school during the time when the first round was conducted to enable them to be enrolled into the party membership register.

The four-day exercise will also be climaxed with village barazas or meetings to enable party members to participate in publicly auditing the formulated registers.

Todwong, however, cautioned the registrars and party administrators not to be manipulated by leaders in the party if they have to enable the party to have a clean members’ register which will be very crucial in having peaceful party primaries which will be organised in a few months’ time.

NRM had the most chaotic primaries as it was organizing for the candidates to front during the 2021 general elections.

In most of the polling stations, the party registers were abandoned and the polling officers allowed each and every one who showed up without even considering the fact that some were agents from their rivals who intended to malice some members more so those they suspected were powerful.

As a result, the party got flag bearers who were deemed weak, hence increasing the number of party independent candidates. To prove a point, a big number of NRM leaning independent candidates ended up winning the general elections whereas more of the NRM flag bearers lost to opposition candidates.
