He said that Chemtai’s abductors, besides the vigorous search of her homes, also interrogated her about Kyagulanyi’s whereabouts.

The National Unity Platform (NUP) secretary general, David Lewis Rubongoya, has contradicted government claims that they are not searching for Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu, stating that security is indeed hunting for the party’s presidential candidate.

Rubongoya cited the abduction of NUP Electoral Commission chairperson, Chemtai Harriet by over 50-armed men from Kapchorwa, searched her home there and Mbale as they thought she was the one who was hiding Kyagulanyi.

He said that Chemtai’s abductors, besides the vigorous search of her homes, also interrogated her about Kyagulanyi’s whereabouts.

He confirmed that Chemtai was released after being held overnight, but with threats and her property, including phones, confiscated.

Rubongoya condemned the act, saying it’s an abuse and part of efforts to suppress opposition. He urged for Uganda’s freedom, tweeting “#FreeUgandaNow”.

The NUP secretary general’s message reads;

“After being abducted and held overnight, comrade Chemtai Harriet has been released. Her crime? She was suspected of hiding @HEBobiwine in Kapchorwa or Mbale. So, after getting her in Kapchorwa, they grabbed her phones, drove her to her home in Mbale, checked everywhere and went through her phones. She says they were over 50-armed men. They asked her where he’s (Kyagulanyi) hiding and eventually dumped her in Mbale, with threats that she will face dire consequences if she is lying to them. The abuse!
