The fundraising drive comes as PLU North East USA rallies its members to support one of its founding organisers as she prepares to appear before an immigration hearing next week on Monday.
The Patriotic League of Uganda (PLU) North East USA chapter has launched an emergency fundraising campaign to support one of its members, Gloria Birungi, who is currently being held in the custody of the United States Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).
According to a statement issued by PLU North East USA Coordinator Andrew Mwase, Birungi was detained by ICE a few days ago and is awaiting an immigration hearing scheduled for Monday, July 27, 2026.
Mwase described the situation as urgent, saying the organisation is mobilising financial support to meet legal expenses, including attorney’s fees, ahead of the court hearing.

“Gloria is a key member of our league. She played an important role in establishing the organisation here in the USA, hosted us on several occasions, and has been a critical organiser and supporter of key events,” Mwase said.
He appealed to members of the Ugandan community and well-wishers to contribute towards the legal fund, saying the organisation is coordinating collective support during what he described as a difficult period.
The appeal requests contributions to be sent via Cash App to Francis Patrick Nkusa, who is coordinating the fundraising effort on behalf of the organisation.
However, the fundraising appeal has reportedly generated mixed reactions among some Ugandans in the diaspora. Some individuals who had initially contributed to the campaign are said to have expressed regret after learning that Birungi is affiliated with PLU.
One Ugandan, who spoke to this website on condition of anonymity, said they had made a donation believing Birungi was simply a Ugandan facing immigration challenges, without knowing of her political affiliation.
“Had we known beforehand about Gloria’s attachment to PLU, we would have left the burden to be carried solely by PLU chairman Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba and his associates,” the source said.
The website could not independently verify how many contributors shared the same view or whether any had sought to withdraw their contributions. PLU North East USA had also not publicly responded to the reported concerns at the time of publication.
The circumstances surrounding Birungi’s detention have not been disclosed, and ICE had not publicly commented on the matter at the time of publication.
