Police Probe Drowning of 10-Year-Old Pupil During School Swimming Lesson

Police said one of the teachers later discovered the incident and raised an alarm. The child was rushed to Iran Hospital for emergency treatment but was pronounced dead on arrival.

Police have launched investigations into the death of a 10-year-old special needs pupil who drowned during a swimming lesson at Hill Preparatory School in Naguru, Nakawa Division.

The deceased has been identified as George Nsawa, a pupil at the school.

According to Kampala Metropolitan Police deputy spokesperson Luke Owoyesigyire, the tragic incident occurred on Friday, July 3, 2026, at around 2:00 p.m. when a group of special needs pupils attended a scheduled swimming lesson at the school’s swimming pool.

Preliminary findings indicate that the children remained in the pool until about 4:00 p.m. As some teachers began escorting a number of pupils back to their classrooms, others stayed behind at the pool under supervision.

“It was during this time that George Nsawa reportedly drowned in the swimming pool,” Owoyesigyire said.

Police said one of the teachers later discovered the incident and raised an alarm. The child was rushed to Iran Hospital for emergency treatment but was pronounced dead on arrival.

The incident was subsequently reported to police by the school headteacher, who was reportedly away from the school when it occurred.

Owoyesigyire said police have opened a death inquiry file and commenced investigations to establish whether negligence contributed to the child’s death.

“Our investigators visited and examined the scene, which was documented and secured. Statements have also been recorded from relevant witnesses as part of the ongoing investigations,” he said.

The child’s body was later transferred from Iran Hospital to Mulago City Mortuary for a post-mortem examination.

Police have urged the public to allow investigators to complete their work, adding that more details will be released as inquiries progress.

“We have commenced investigations into possible negligence. Inquiries are ongoing and more details will be communicated in due course,” Owoyesigyire said.
