Police Raid, Tear Gas Kyagulanyi’s Lira Hotel Rooms, Arrest 15 Campaign Team Members

Last night, security operatives comprising of police and military personnel raided a Lira hotel where National Unity Platform (NUP) presidential candidate, Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu and his campaign team were booked in, forced open doors to several rooms and fired tear gas canisters therein, and one person is said to have been seriously affected.

The unidentified female person was carried out of the hotel and rushed to yet to be identified health facility for medical attention but in a critical condition as she could no longer breath.

On seeing a number of cameras trained on them and their actions, the security men withdrew and camped a few metres away from the hotel.

Subsequently, Territorial Police in North Kyoga Region arrested several of Kyagulanyi’s supporters, and launched investigations into a violent confrontation involving NUP supporters who allegedly attacked a police surveillance team along the Lira–Alebtong highway near Obot Primary School, Obot A village, Bar sub-county.

According to reports, at around 1:00pm, a police motor vehicle Reg. No. UP 4816 (operating under cover UBK 380Q) was intercepted by a group of NUP foot soldiers led by Geoffrey Unzima alias Tawa and another unidentified suspect.

The group, travelling in a vehicle Reg. No. UAN 925Q and a green TOYOTA ‘Drone’ Reg. No. UA 933AU, allegedly blocked the police vehicle, deflated all four tyres using sharp objects, seized the car key sensor, and robbed the officers of a Dell laptop (worth sh1.5m), two jerricans of diesel, and personal belongings.

The victims, SSP Isabirye Julius from CID Headquarters and his driver Sgt. Muhungo Peter, were on surveillance duty during the NUP presidential campaign rally when the confrontation occurred.

Preliminary investigations indicate the attackers suspected the vehicle was carrying a jammer interfering with their online campaign communications, having trailed their convoy through several districts including Manafwa, Namisindwa, Tororo, Busia, Apac, Kwania, Kole, and Lira.

The attack left the police vehicle immobilized, with the lost key sensor and tyre damage estimated at sh700,000.

A case of malicious damage and robbery has been registered under SD Ref: 07/28/10/2025 at Bar sub-county police station.

Police confirmed that 15 suspects travelling in the TOYOTA drone vehicle have been arrested to assist in investigations, while the prime suspects Geoffrey Unzima alias Tawa and his accomplice are on the run. Efforts are ongoing to recover the stolen items and apprehend all involved individuals.

“We condemn this act of lawlessness and assure the public that perpetrators will be brought to justice,” said SP Patrick Jimmy Okema, the North Kyoga Regional Police PRO.
