A student at St. Thomas Vocational Secondary School in Rutoto Sub-county, Rubirizi District, has reportedly died by suspected suicide following allegations that she was subjected to severe punishment by a teacher.
The deceased has been identified as Sheilla Ankunda.
According to preliminary information, Ankunda was allegedly found in possession of a love letter, prompting disciplinary action by a yet-to-be-identified teacher. She was reportedly caned and later informed that she would appear before the school’s disciplinary committee.
It is alleged that, distressed by the incident, Ankunda returned to the school dormitory, where she was later found dead in an apparent suicide.

When contacted for a comment, the school headteacher, Fr. Charles Niwagaba, declined to discuss the matter, saying, “Please give us a break you people, we are dealing with a lot right now,” before ending the call.
