Initially, the card had been portioned out to Luyirika while Malende was undergoing treatment abroad but since her return, the game seems to have drastically changed.

As never anticipated before, acquisition of the National Unity Platform (NUP) flag to stand on the party’s ticket has turned into an unprecedented battle with contestants mustering all energies to access the flag which has, under the prevailing circumstances, turned into a hot cake.
In Kampala, the battle between incumbent Shamim Malende and KCCA speaker Zahara Luyirika for the Woman MP seat has escalated to levels that have seen divisions at high party levels. The battle almost turned dramatic at the Kabaka’s 32nd coronation anniversary at Kibuli, when each of the two struggled tirelessly apparently to be seen to be rubbing shoulders with the party chief Kyagulanyi Sentammu aka Bobi Wine.
As things continue to shape out, big shots have been conspicuously supporting either side. For instance, Kyagulanyi’s Deputy Lina Zedriga, Mukono Municipality MP Betty Nambooze and NUP ‘first lady’ Barbie Kyagulanyi and others have made utterances and taken actions portraying them as being aligned behind Malende.
And while Secretary General Lewis Rubongoya is said to be fully behind Luyirika, there are unnamed party bigwigs who are stationed in the –no-man’s-land, not wishing to lose either Malende or Malende. An official who talked on conditions of anonymity said, “We could retain both by begging Luyirika to remain a KCCA councillor and we field her as speaker, but as for Malende, there is no alternative post we could assign to her”.
Initially, the card had been portioned out to Luyirika while Malende was undergoing treatment abroad but since her return, the game seems to have drastically changed.
In Mukono, the district chairman Rev. Peter Bakaluba Mukasa ‘Omwana w’omwami’, on learning that the card is being given to former mayor Johnson Muyanja Ssenyonga, opted to attack Ronald Kibuule’s Mukono North constituency, but onlookers say this could be a big miscalculation as Kibuule seems to have garnered a lot of support this time round.
Subscribers to this school of thought think Bakaluba is going to scramble for the few votes with incumbent Abdallah Kiwanuka Mulimamayuuni and DP’s Kenneth Ssebagayunga, while Kibuule will scoop the majority votes like he did in the NRM primaries. Time will tell.
In Jinja City North, things have made a dramatic turnaround, when Ramadhan Nanga who in 2021 lost the seat to FDC’s David Isabirye Aga under NUP’s blessing, is again tussling it out with the same man but this time, who has also switched allegiance to NUP. Another strong man in this race is comedian Hussein Muyonjo ‘Swengere’.
Makindye West’s Allan Ssewanyana who claims the issues for which he was elected in 2021 have not been decisively ironed out, is battling with David Musiri, Makindye Mayor Ali Kasirye Mulyannyama and Farooq Ntege.
Mulyannyama has switched interest from the Lord Mayorship which he initially wanted to run for, and now turned to Makindye West.
The bad blood between Busiro East MP Medard Lubega Sseggona and his boss Kyagulanyi seems to have somewhat eased after the two’s closed-door dialogue at Magere. Although he was reluctant to print posters, immediately after the Magere encounter, he flashed campaign posters and flagged off his campaign team.

Meanwhile Kyengera Mayor Sir Mathias Walukagga who is also in the race, speaks very emphatically while new convert to NUP Emmanuel Magoola Matovu is also warming up.
MP Aloysius Mukasa of Lubaga South wants to retain the card which ushered him into the august house in 2021; his major contender Eugene Nassolo seems to have trust in the Catholic Church. Others include Adam Mugga and Obed Lubega. There is a strong battle between Joyce Bagala, Prossy Mukisa Nabosa, Fausta Nalubega Bitaano and District speaker Catherine Nalweyiso.
Nabbosa is said to be enjoying an inclination from Mityana Municipaliuty MP Francis Zaake while Nalubega is said to be the darling to officials at Kavule. As for incumbent Bagala, she is engaged in a massive constituency-wide campaign assuring voters that she is still alive and kicking.
