The police in Kayunga district are holding three medical workers from a private health facility on allegations of theft of government drugs and equipment.
The suspects are currently being held at Kayunga Central Police Station facing charges of theft and sale of government drugs.
The health workers; two females and one male were arrested from Ziriddamu Medical Centre located in Kayunga Town on Wednesday.
According to Solomon Baleke, the Kayunga
deputy Resident District Commissioner, who led the intelligence-led operation, the suspects were caught red-handed selling government malaria testing kits, drugs and other medical equipment belonging to the government of Uganda.
“We received information that the private clinic was selling government drugs and when we stormed the facility, we found the government items on sale,” Baleke said.
A police detective at Kayunga Central Police station said the owner of the clinic, only identified as Mugerwa who is an in-charge for a Health Centre III in Kyotera district who was not at the clinic at the time of the operation is being sought by police to explain where he obtained the drugs.
Baleke, who vowed to crack down on health workers who steal government drugs said the practice is rampant in all health units in the area.
Rosette Sikahwa, the Kayunga district police commander decried the vice saying it is on increase. Sikahwa said that the investigations into the incident is ongoing and that suspects will be taken to court later.
