Police in Mbarara have recovered the dismembered body of a taxi driver who had been missing for more than three weeks, in a case that has shocked residents and prompted a homicide investigation.
The deceased, identified as Basajja Majidu, was a resident of Kakooba Division in Mbarara City South and operated a taxi on the Mbarara–Rukungiri route.
According to preliminary police findings, Majidu disappeared shortly after reportedly selling a plot of land in Rukungiri Town for sh30m. His whereabouts remained unknown despite efforts by family members and colleagues to trace him.
The search ended tragically when police recovered parts of his body from River Rwizi. Authorities believe the driver was murdered before his body was dismembered and dumped in the river in an apparent attempt to conceal the crime.

Although detectives have not yet disclosed the suspect’s identity or possible motive, investigators are exploring whether the land sale and the proceeds from the transaction could be linked to the murder.
The recovery of the body has sent shockwaves through the transport community in Mbarara, where Majidu was well known among fellow drivers and passengers on the Mbarara–Rukungiri route.
Police say investigations are ongoing and have appealed to members of the public with any information that could aid the inquiry to come forward.
The body has been taken for postmortem examination as detectives work to establish the full sequence of events leading to Majidu’s death.
