In a bid to reinforce the core values of the legal profession, management of the Law School of the Uganda Christian University (UCU) Mukono has issued directives on the dress code for law students.
The directive contained in a 26th May 2025 internal memo from the Dean of Students at the School of Law instructed the law students to wear black suits every Monday and Thursday, adding that no student will be allowed into the classroom, the main library or the school law offices without adhering to the specified dress code.
The memo of the directive taking effect from 5th June 2025 and copied to the Director of Academic affairs, the Director of Students’ Affairs and all School of Academic and Administration staff, stipulated that the suits should be black and worn over white long sleeved shirts, neck ties for male students , and black shoes.
Suits and shoes of a different colour, sandals, canvass shoes and shoes that expose the toes will not be permitted.
On all days of the week, law students are required to have well kempt hair, while coloured or tinted hair will not be permitted. Male students with hair of unacceptable styles and fashions shall also be prohibited from accessing classrooms, the main library or the School of Law offices.
According to the Dean of the School of Law, the purpose of the new measures is to buttress clear expectations for appropriate LLB student decorum within or outside the University setting, and to reflect the University’s precepts.
