A village chairperson in Nakaseke district who testified in a court case involving two family members has been brutally killed in what villagers think is in relation to his testimony where he defended one of the warring parties.

The 63-year-old Fred Ssebyala, was the village chairperson for Wabuloolo village in Wakyaato sub-county was murdered shortly after testifying in a court case where a father and his son had a disagreement over a piece of land.

Deus Mugume and his father identified as Kakyenyere took a sh60m bank loan and offered land as security. They are said to have shared the money but that on repayment, the father failed to raise money and the son paid for him.

To strike a balance, Mugume took the land and transferred it into his name leading his father Kakyenyere to file a court case accusing his son for allegedly stealing his land.

In court, the deceased testified in favour of the son which did not go down well with Kakyenyere. Ssebyala further told the court that Mugume had been given the land by his maternal uncle.

This led to escalation of the friction between Kakyenyere and the chairman, and residents widely believe that this could have a bearing in the chairman’s demise.

Police spokesperson for Savannah Region Sam Twineamazima confirmed the aforesaid and added that investigations are underway. The deceased left behind six widows and over 20 children.
