The Province of the Church of Uganda has asked Busoga Diocese to submit fresh names for aspirants to the position of the bishop, to replace the outgoing Paul Samson Naimanhye who is slated to retire in December this year.

This follows a protest by faithfuls who rejected the names of Rev. Can. Joseph Kintu and Rev. Can. Mathias Katiko, who are blamed for, among other reasons, not meeting standards and norms of the church.

The Christians petitioned the Archbishop in a document where they accused the two of lacking uprightness in financial, matrimonial and faith matters, including fathering children outside matrimonial relations, in the case of Can. Joseph Kintu.

Kintu is also blamed for illegally soliciting for money from heads of church-run schools without a trace of accountability, and engagement in land wrangles.

Rev. Mathias Katiko was blamed for having married only three years ago at his advanced age of 55 years.

The Provincial Secretary Rev. Can William Ongeng confirmed this, saying that the names of the initial two applicants were rejected and returned to be replaced by new ones.

Earlier, Can Ongeng issued a release refuting social media claims that Busoga Diocese had got a new Bishop to take over from retiring Naimanhye, saying the claims held no element of truth.

Naimanhye was named Bishop of Busoga on July 31, 2015 and consecrated  on January 24, 2016 as the third Bishop, replacing Rev. Dr. Michael Kyomya.
