Unaware that this would be the last mission they would ever plot to execute, the three, suspected to be passing on pseudonyms on forged identification, drew plans to waylay a worker in a bakery who was delivering staff salaries around Kabojja in Kyengera Town Council.

However, working on an intelligence tip off, operatives of the Crime Intelligence and JAT moved ahead of the thugs and got to the venue earlier and took positions at Kabojja A zone in Kasenge Ward.

Security operatives attempted to arrest them by shooting in the air and when they tried to flee, they were shot several times whereupon two died instantly while the rider tried to ride on. However, the pursuing team found him dead as well at Kasenge where he collapsed.

According to KMP spokesperson Racheal Kawala, two identity cards were recovered from one of the thieves, one in the name of Moses Kachingwe aged 21 years, and another one in the name of Moses Byaruhanga and allegedly attached to the JAT.

Kawala said a fake gun and metallic gadgets suspectedly used in burglary missions and knives were recovered from the dead men.

She further said that the security identity card recovered from one of the dead men bore the title STG, short form for Senior Traffic Sergeant, and also indicating that he was attached to JAT; Kawala noted however that is not the format used in indicating police ranks.

The dead men, the police PRO noted, are suspected to be part of a bigger gang that has been waylaying people carrying hefty sums of money from or to banks, cash used in mobile money transactions, and salaries.

Sources indicate that police began by arresting a bodaboda cyclist who had been the robbers’ agent by identifying people carrying large sums of money, and he was used to help in disclosing their next mission, making it easy for security to trap and kill them.

The cyclist was forced into calling the robbers and lying to them that he was ferrying a passenger with a huge sum of money.

The robbers and the cyclist agreed upon a post for them to lay an ambush which enabled the security men to get there first.

The police team headed by the crime intelligence chief for Kampala South Arthur Twinamasiko, Nateete DPC Robert Kacum and Nateete Crime Intelligence boss Macline Kemigisha arrived shortly after the death of the robbers and later took the bodies to Mulago City Mortuary.

Several residents told this reporter that they were pleased by the security team’s action, especially given that the dead men were young energetic men who could ably use their hands and brains to work honourably to earn a living.
