KAMPALA — Police have arrested 93 suspects, including four women, in an intelligence-led operation targeting suspected criminal activity along the Northern Bypass and surrounding areas.

The operation was conducted on October 7, 2026, between 7:00pm and 11:00pm, following intelligence reports indicating that suspected criminals were operating along the bypass, particularly around Busega and the Kyengera Flyover.

According to Kampala Metropolitan Police spokesperson SP Racheal Kawala, the operation targeted areas believed to be used by suspected criminals as hideouts and bases for targeting members of the public during evening traffic congestion.

Police teams conducted searches along the Northern Bypass, Busega Fish Market, including cinema halls in the surrounding areas, and the swamp beyond the Mityana Road Flyover towards Bulenga.

Other identified areas within Kigwanya Zone were also searched during the operation.

Police said intelligence indicated that the suspects allegedly took advantage of heavy evening traffic to target motorists and other members of the public.

A total of 93 suspects were arrested during the operation, with preliminary searches leading to the recovery of several exhibits.

Among the items recovered were suspected opium, suspected stolen mobile phones and two knives, according to police.

The suspects and recovered exhibits were taken into police custody for further processing and investigation in accordance with the law.

Police said the operation forms part of ongoing efforts to disrupt criminal networks and improve security along major roads and areas experiencing heavy evening traffic.

The operation comes amid heightened security concerns around congested sections of the Kampala metropolitan road network, where traffic jams can provide opportunities for criminals to target motorists, passengers and pedestrians.

Police have urged members of the public to remain vigilant and report suspicious activity to security authorities.
